Balancing Faith with a Fierce Commitment to His Country

Shalev Yitzhak Sagron

On November 13, 2024, the Israel Defense Forces mourned the loss of six brave soldiers from the Golani Brigade during a battle in southern Lebanon. Among them was Sergeant Shalev Yitzhak Sagron, a 21-year-old from Sderot, whose life was defined by his unwavering faith and devotion to his country.

Shalev’s father, Yigal, spoke with heartfelt pride about his son. Calm, kind, and deeply rooted in his beliefs, Shalev was a young man whose respect for others and love for his homeland shone brightly. From a young age, he dreamed of becoming a combat soldier, seeing his military service not just as a duty, but as a calling. He often compared his IDF uniform to the sacred attire of the respected Rabbi, a reflection of his profound reverence for both faith and country.

Shalev’s courage was evident early in his service. Enlisting just two weeks before October 7, 2024, he stood guard outside his family’s shelter one fateful night, armed only with a knife, ready to protect his loved ones. When offered the chance to attend a prestigious squad commanders’ course, he chose instead to join his comrades in Lebanon. Though his decision worried his father, Yigal understood Shalev’s unshakable sense of duty.

During their final encounter on Simchat Torah, Yigal sensed a quiet farewell in his son’s demeanor. Shalev seemed to know the risks he faced, yet his resolve remained unbroken. Despite the family’s prayers, the devastating news arrived: Shalev had fallen in battle.

Yigal described Shalev as righteous and pure, a young man who seamlessly blended religious devotion with practical action. His sacrifice is a powerful reminder of the strength found in unity and purpose. Though his life was cut short, Shalev’s legacy of faith, courage, and love for Israel will inspire generations to come.
